As you probably already know, back pain is a very common complaint. About three in four adults will experience back pain during their lifetime-and that number may very well rise, given our aging population and recent trend of obesity.

Low back pain (pain in your lumbar spine) is the most common. Most back pain comes from sprains and strains caused by stressful movements: lifting something without using proper techniques or a sudden twisting motion are just two examples of how you can hurt your back.

Forget Skating Babies - It's All About the Water

Great Ad - so credit where credit is due.

But, I want you to think about how much water you are drinking during winter?

The sad fact is that most of us are chronically dehydrated. Here we are, with clean water costing practically nothing, and we still don't drink enough.

Your body needs about 20 ml of water per kilo of body weight. It's a very easy equation to do. If you weigh 100 kilograms, you need to drink 2 litres MINIMUM daily. This amount is just for you to function, let alone perform optimally.

Dehydration impairs not only your health, but paves the way for disease, illness, tiredness and dysfunctional detoxification to occur.

Water is essential to maintain blood volume, regulate body temperature and allow muscle contractions to take place. Water makes up around 60% of our bodies - so keeping topping it up every day.

Struggle to drink enough water? Here are a few tips to make drinking enough water easy:

  • Work out what is the appropriate amount of water for you need to drink each day. (This is usually between one to two litres per day.)

  • Fill a one litre container (i.e. an empty soft drink bottle or your "special" water bottle) and carry that with you for the day.

Take the water bottle with you in the car, meetings, watching television or while working at a desk. By taking regular small sips you will be surprised at how much water you can easily consume.

  • By spreading the drinking during the day it will become less of a chore and you will be able to keep track of exactly how much you have drunk (rather than trying to remember how many glasses you drank at breakfast!).

  • By drinking regularly you will be constantly cleansing your system. Regular water intake will flush your body of toxins and promote improved health and well-being.

Regular water intake improves kidney and liver function allowing these organs to work more efficiently which is important when recovering from illness or injury (a back problem), poor diet, stress and pressure of a busy lifestyle.

  • When you drink regularly you will be less likely to consume unnecessary coffee and "cola" soft drinks. Usually the body signals to us we are thirsty. We interpret this to mean we "need a coffee, coke or cup of tea".

We have the caffeine hit but it has a negative effect on our water balance (caffeine removes water from our system - it is a diuretic). So our body is still thirsty! Soon after we then feel we need another coffee or coke drink!

  • By drinking water regularly you will also be less likely to become hungry and snack on unnecessary foods. Regular water intake promotes a feeling of "fullness" within the stomach. This is the easiest and cheapest way to lose weight and body fat.

  • By doing it this way, you are avoiding buying excess plastic bottles - at least you won't be contributing to land fill!

Like the taste of Gatorade or Powerade better? Well before you reach for that bottle, stop.

Unless you are running a marathon, or doing some seriously hard training, you really don't need it.

With each bottle of sports water, you can be taking in massive amounts of artificial colouring (how did you think they got the drink so blue/red?), flavouring, SUGAR or worse -  artificial sweeteners.

Each bottle contains around 700 kJ - if you are drinking two bottles a day, that's equivalent to another meal!

Not only are they high in sugar, they are also highly acidic - moreso than soft drinks and fruit juice! Scary thought - especially if your kids are drinking them!

We are currently developing a sports water which will be low sugar and low acid with the correct electrolytes - not just salt and chloride which is in most of the current sports water formualtions. This will be a revolutionary new product in the world of sports drinks.

It will help you to train and function everyday, without the added kilojoules or artificial sweeteners. Unlike other sports and mineral waters, it won't contain chemicals either - always an added bonus for the whole family.
